South Korea’s president yesterday pressed North Korea to act over denuclearisation and break an ongoing diplomatic deadlock with the US.
But Moon Jae-in also suggested Washington consider “corresponding measures” to encourage Pyongyang toward nuclear disarmament, in part by declaring a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War with a peace treaty replacing the existing armistice.
He spoke during an annual televised address following North Korea leader Kim Jong-un’s surprise trip this week to Beijing to meet Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, during which Mr Kim reportedly renewed a pledge to denuclearise.
Chinese media indicated that Mr Xi had given his blessing for a second summit between Mr Kim and US President Donald Trump.
